Down-Shift Into Winter - A Short Qi Gong Exercise

We now find ourselves moving from fall, into winter. In terms of five elemental theory, that’s moving from the “metal” element (fall), into the “water” element (winter). Or in terms of yin and yang theory, from partial yin (yin within yang), to the most full yin time of year (yin within yin).

That means yin qualities will be at their height this time of year. It calls for more restfulness, quietude, and stillness. This is the time of year we, and the earth in this hemisphere, rest and recover. We can harmonize with this process by choosing carefully what activities to focus on.

Focusing Inward

Whereas the yang (warmer) months allowed for more activities outside, the “water” season calls for turning inward, both physically and psychologically. It’s a great time to beef-up your seated meditation practice, doing so regularly each day.

But moving inside also means having less space. So, while Tai Chi is a great exercise for the winter (it is afterall, the most “yin” martial art), you may find yourself doing more qigong instead, as those exercises typically need less space. However, it’s still a great idea to get outside on days that you can, weather permitting, as the fresh air can be quite invigorating to the body’s energy (Qi).

Simple Qi Gong for Winter

Speaking of Qi Gong, here’s a great short routine from online instructor, Lee Holden. He offers a great way to get moving on those cold winter days when you just feel stiff, lethargic, and are having trouble getting started. It is very accessible, even if you’re not someone who exercises very much.

He also talks about winter concepts of restoring the foundational Kidney energy, and strengthening the lower back. But also balancing “water” by activating “fire” energy. Lastly, that winter is a time for turning inward, connecting with your inner truth, and taking the time to slow down. I hope you’ve enjoyed this exercise.
